Bulk attribute editing

Bulk editing allows you to make changes to the attributes of a set of objects of the same subtype without launching a validation workflow and regardless of their status. The objects will be modified by setting the same value for each selected attribute across all the selected objects.

Bulk editing is only available to users with the administrative API permission, since it allows editing objects in states that would otherwise be impossible to edit.

Once the subtype has been chosen and the necessary filters applied, the objects to be edited can be marked. At the bottom of the screen, the number of selected objects will be shown (in the case of datasets, the number of dataset_fields they contain will also appear).

Moving forward, the full list of attributes from the template corresponding to the selected object subtype is displayed. These attributes can be selected and, as they are checked, they are added to the form.

These attributes are loaded into the form with the default values and validations configured in the template. So, for example, if a numeric attribute has a validation that prevents its value from exceeding 100, bulk editing will also not allow a value greater than 100 to be entered for it. Or if the value of a Reference Metadata type attribute depends on the value chosen in another template attribute, it cannot be edited without having previously chosen the other one. In addition, inheritable or non-editable attributes cannot be edited this way.

Once the values have been entered for the attributes, clicking on "View old values" shows, for each attribute, the new value entered and the current values in the selected objects.

When selecting "Bulk attribute editing", a window appears to the user with the name of the job that Anjana has auto-generated, giving the user the option to change it. This window includes the "Remove objects from workspace" option to make management easier for the user.

Upon confirmation, the progress of the job is shown to the user on screen.

And, upon completion, the user is shown the link to access the job details. If more than 20 objects were requested for editing, they will be processed in different jobs, so several links will be shown.

By clicking on these links, the user accesses the screen where the completed job and the editing status for each object are shown, along with the reason for failure in case the editing of an object caused an error.

By accessing each edited object, it is possible to see the changes in its template

Editing each object is audited and the corresponding snapshot for the object is saved.

LIMITATIONS:

  • To avoid performance loss during processing and putting strain on the machine, it is recommended not to bulk edit more than 5000 objects. Therefore, if you want to modify datasets with dataset fields, the number of entities in the Excel file (both datasets and dataset fields) should not exceed 5000. If you need to edit more than 5000 entities or relationships, this must be done in separate jobs.
